First Tools for the Bench: What a Beginner Actually Needs
A small set of good hand tools covers the first year. Buy slowly and buy once.
The core set
- A jeweller's saw frame and blades.
- Flat-nose, round-nose and chain-nose pliers.
- Needle files and a half-round hand file.
- A bench pin and a steel block.
- A rawhide or nylon mallet.
For joining
A small torch, solder, flux and a heatproof surface. Learn soldering with supervision if you can; it is the skill that unlocks everything else.
Safety first
- Eye protection whenever you cut, file or polish.
- Ventilation for soldering and chemicals.
- Tie back hair and loose sleeves.
Later, not now
Casting, for example by the lost-wax method, rolling mills and polishing motors can wait until you know what you make most.
Practise in copper
It behaves much like silver and costs far less. Mistakes are part of the price of learning; keep them cheap.
